I was very happy with how quickly and effectively I learnt to operate a video camera. I used range of shots with a variety of camera angles/positions. A lot of people commented on this. I found my footage relatively successful because of this and the fact that I had steady hands and used a tripod. The final scene was only made possible through my use of the tripod because I required all of the cast to be in the scene. The tripod also allowed me to record a panning shot of the car turning the corner. People really liked this shot. I was extremely pleased with how I took advantage of the editing software and produced a polished film opening with footage taken from a lower quality camera. I made the film polished through the cropping of video clips and audio files, using effective transitioning (dissolve, wipe, dip to black, fade), adjusting the speed of video clips and volume level of audio files, but most importantly through creating a 'cinematic' look by adjusting brightness/contrast/hue balance levels of each clip through the use of 'Pro Amp' and the 'Three-way Color Corrector' on Premiere Pro. People who viewed the raw footage then the final product said there was a significant improvement in quality. Finally I thought I successfully met the brief of the assignment; I produced a polished film opening that could easily be followed by an entire film.
• Steps in the process that could have been better done;
I felt some of my footage was of poor quality due to the low exposure and contrast levels. I believe that while this is mainly because of the lower quality video camera I used, I think that my lack of lighting sources in the final scenes where it is darker, contributed to the lower quality of some of my footage. I did want a darker, more scary lighting effect in the final scenes as it is shot at dusk, but I still feel I could have improved the quality by using an artificial lighting source.
• Strategies suggested to achieve this;
- Using artificial lighting sources to improve the quality of some of the footage.
- Using a higher quality video camera (although I had enough trouble organizing the use of any video camera).
• Some evaluation of how these changes to the production process may have affected the media product;
The negative aspects I faced during the production process; poor exposure/contrast levels in some scenes, meant that I had to do significantly more editing. However, because I had to spend more time editing I learnt a lot more about Premiere Pro which helped me produce a higher quality, polished film opening which people really noticed and appreciated. I thought that while editing contributed largely to my polished final production I thought my operation of a video camera was just as effective because I used a large variation in shots which people really enjoyed. While negative aspects changed the amount of time I spent on certain areas of the production process, these factors helped me produce a high quality media product, which received a positive response from people.
